The Healing Power of Qigong
Though I’d heard of Qigong as a healing practice before, I never really understood what a powerful healing tool it could be until I discovered the teachings of Master Chunyi Lin, the founder of Spring Forest Qigong (SFQ). I had the opportunity to become a Certified Practice Group Leader under this system, which encompasses a movement training and powerful healing program. I’m excited to share these experiences with you! The information below provides details about Qigong, and how to either join my weekly classes or book a private healing session.
What is Qigong?
Qigong (also spelled as “Chi Gong”, “Chi Kong”, or “Qi Gong”) is an ancient Chinese scientific study of the power of Qi in the body and the universe, and of how to use this power to benefit all aspects of life. "Qi" is an energy with intelligence, a form of life force. ”Qi” is the energy in a person’s body, “Gong” means “the work of” or “the practice of”. In China, the study and practice of transforming the energy (qi) to live a life of optimum health, wellness, and happiness came to be called qigong.
How does Qigong work?
Qigong starts from the foundation that everything is energy, including you! Every cell in your body is a form of energy, you are an energy being. Your thoughts and feelings are forms of energy too.
When the body experiences disease or dis-ease, it’s a result of energy blockages. Sickness, after all, is a form of energy too – whether it manifests physically, mentally, or emotionally. Experiencing things such as stress and challenging emotions, are most commonly the cause of energy blockages. Energy blockages cause your body's natural healing system to breakdown and malfunction. If there is a blockage in any energy channel, this blockage can grow bigger and eventually make the body sick. It can also cause energy blockages in another part of the body, too. Qigong teaches that certain movements of the physical body can help remove these blockages.
I resonated with Spring Forest Qigong (SFQ), as Master Chunyi Lin combined his 40+ years of learning about the human body, Qigong, and studying with several of the finest Qigong Masters in China. He created a system of movements for modern humans, with the goal of optimizing the essence of the practice so people could spend less time and achieve more. He combined his expert knowledge of biology, Qigong, philosophy, and science, into movements that contribute to stimulating energy flow and removing energy blockages. While the older systems of Qigong were a mystery, required rigid discipline and were challenging, Master Lin has created movements that are easy to learn and easy to do, requiring no prior experience. Even individuals who are experiencing a lack of mobility can partake.
SFQ also has a meditation (yin) element to balance the movement (yang) practice. They can be practiced separately; but, when they’re combined, it helps the body to balance even faster.
But does it really work?
There is medical research and ongoing studies about Qigong. Master Lin’s healing techniques and active exercises, specifically under SFQ, have been studied by the Mayo Clinic and other institutions. One clinical study at The Mayo Clinic documents the effects of external Qigong on improving chronic pain (over five years). The other two clinical studies show the positive impacts of a moving practice on depression, chronic pain, and emotional distress. You can find the details under the resource heading at the end of this post, if you’re interested to learn more.
Many SFQ students have reported incredible results after a consistent practice of only 5-10 minutes per day.

In Chinese Medicine, illness and disease is believed to occur due to lack of energy flow or Qi disruptions in the body. Once these blockages are open, Qi can flow through all meridians, bringing balance back into the body. Using Universal Qi, a hands-on-healing process is used to direct Qi to open blocked channels.

Utilizing Spring Forest Qigong as a Self-Directed Treatment for Chronic Pain & Emotional Distress
Conclusion: Both the active exercise and meditative aspects of Spring Forest Qigong proved to be effective self-care modalities for persons with perceived chronic physical pain and/or emotional distress. Subjects demonstrated significant improvement both anecdotally and statistically during the study period. - Clinical study by Jane F. Coleman, R.N., PhD, Professor Emerita, Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, MN
Spring Forest Qigong Research - Depression Study
Conclusion: Spring Forest Qigong "extremely effective" in treating Depression & Bipolar Disorder. Dr. Gaik found that all subjects improved over the treatment period and a very significant level of improvement in the majority of the subjects who were measured at serious levels of depression. - Clinical Study by Dr. Frances V. External Qigong for Chronic Pain
Conclusions: "Subjects with chronic pain who received external qigong experienced reduction in pain intensity following each qigong treatment. This is especially impressive given the long duration of pain (>5 years) in most of the participants," writes lead author Ann Vincent, MD, MBBS, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. - Clinical study by Ann Vincent, Brent A.
